a strong collaboration on food waste

In collaboration with Rema 1000 and the organization Stop Wasting Food, DanRoots has managed to create a market for small carrots, that should have been discarded.

The carrots only differ in size and shape – they are still high quality and flavor. Throwing away so many high quality carrots, due to wrong size are not sustainable, and thus this collaboration emerged. Watch the short video, that briefly tells the story and find the “mini carrots” in Rema 1000 stores.

Flower fields – biodiversity

To create diversity in the agricultural areas, DanRoots has established plant areas along areas by the main building. The plant areas are incredibly beautiful and many people passing by pick a bouquet of “wild flowers”.

The flowers are not only nice to look at – they are also good for the bees. Having many active insects increases biodiversity, which is also increased by insect hotels and piles of stones where insects can hide/live.

Look for the sign when the flowers start to bloom.

Solar-powered hatch machines

Organic root vegetables must grow without the use of pesticides, and therefore all weed, need to be removed by hand. It’s a time consuming job, that used to be done with tractors driving the weeding machines. Today, the tractors have been replaced with solar-powered hatchbacks.

Every year, we weed approximately 700 hectar of organic soil, and before solar-powered weeding trucks arrived, we measured that each tractor drove approximately 580 hours per season and that the consumption was approximately 20 liters of diesel oil per hour. In total, for one season, the diesel consumption was approx. 116,000 liters of diesel oil ………. This is now eliminated, which is good for both economy and environment.

focus on green efforts

The global agricultural sector faces a crucial challenge – feeding a growing population while meeting ambitious climate targets. DanRoots has embarked on a major effort to help moving towards a more sustainable future in food production. One of the big goals are to be able to document the total carbon footprint of a bag of root vegetables.

DanRoots’ goal is to combine professional knowledge with data from practice using the latest digital technology to promote innovation that supports the development of sustainable food production.

We always recommend that root vegetables are washed well before cooking to avoid soil bacteria in the kitchen.
